Live Review: The XX

After a summer of festivals and fresh from supporting Florence and the Machine on tour, The XX set off on their very own headline tour only a few weeks/days later. The show tonight was a sell out, people were very excited to see this band live and I don’t think they disappointed anyone.

Blinding the first few rows of people with their bright ‘XX’ lights they came to the stage and straight into Intro, the first track on their album. The XX do small venues well, you feel that if they played bigger venues some of their magic would be lost. Everything about the band is minimalist, not just the music, but the whole show. They dress in all black and have a very simple stage set up too, just them and the XX lights. While the music is minimalist the effect of it is not. The twin vocals of Romy Madeley Croft and Oliver Sim really compliment each other and sound great. The samples they use echo all around the round and through your body.

They’re not a talkative band, something they apologised for towards the end of the set, but it works well for them. In fact, you can’t help but feel that if they came on and cracked loads of jokes you’d be a bit disappointed. Saying that, they thanked the crowd after every song and looked to enjoy the show. They played the whole of their debut album and their cover of Teardrops, which gets a play at every show they do.
